I was speaking to James today, and we were chatting about films and I said how much I liked Daniel Craig as Bond and he said "Really? He doesn't do anything for me". Now is that an indication? Or is it my imagination.
Oh and one step further... we have swapped mobile numbers

It's so hard to tell with these things. I'm always optimistic as a first instinct, then start casualising peoples' words as much as possible to destroy my hopes... I'm silly like that

It's all still sounding positive - and to echo my words from earlier this month (and those of other wise commenters here) he's still definitely a friend that it's good for you to have in your life. And now that you have exchanged mobile numbers it's clear that he likes having you as a friend and doesn't care what others think about your sexuality, should that come out.
Enjoy having him around (and all that does for you physically!) and play the rest by ear. You've handled the situation admirably and have nothing to be embarrassed about - keep your school bag infront of you at all times and be grateful to have such a nice chap as a friend.
Nothing else will become clear until you finally get to have that one-on-one chat/date. Maybe take your school bag along ...
